Hey - thanks for opening this.
You might be wondering what Business Stuff is and why it exists (another Substack? Really?). Fair. There’s a lot of noise out there.
But if you’ve ever rolled your eyes at another “I scaled to 7 figures” post… or felt like business advice online is either written for people with teams of 15 or a trust fund -then you’re in the right place.
❌ The problem with how we talk about business
Running a business today is messy.
One minute you're pricing a proposal, the next you're fixing your WiFi, replying to five client DMs, wondering why that post flopped, and then panicking because someone on LinkedIn said you should be building a personal brand, like, yesterday.
The business content out there is either:
🤯 Overcomplicated (“build a high-ticket evergreen funnel using AI, obviously”)
💤 Overdone (“5 morning habits of 6-figure CEOs”)
Or 🙄 disconnected from reality (“I work two hours a week and make £50k/month from my course that I launched while on a yoga retreat”).
If you’ve ever thought, “None of this applies to me,” you’re not alone.
So what is Business Stuff?
It’s a weekly-ish newsletter for people who run small, scrappy, brilliant businesses - and don’t want to feel like they’re the only ones finding it hard sometimes.
We’re here to talk honestly about:
Client disasters and freelance red flags
The weird world of day rates
Things that actually helped this month (no affiliates, just real tools)
What it’s like to run a business in real life - school runs, anxiety, late invoices and all
It’s written in plain English, by someone who’s been self-employed for 7+ years, and still gets stuck on pricing, delegation, and whether I’m doing enough.
You won’t get “top tips for scaling.”
You will get the kind of stuff you’d actually talk about in the van, in the kitchen, or in a voice note to a mate after a client’s asked for “one last tweak.”
Why should you care?
Honestly? You don’t have to. You’re busy.
But if you’re looking for something real - something written by another small biz owner who’s not here to sell you a blueprint or make you feel like you’re not doing enough - then this might be a good email to have in your inbox.
The plan is to post once a week. Sometimes more. Never spammy. Always useful, or at least a bit funny.
You can read, reply, ignore it, share it, or even write for it if you fancy.
What’s next?
First real post drops soon:
“Things You Can Say Here That You Can’t Say on LinkedIn.”
Spoiler: one of them is “I miss being an employee.”
Hit subscribe if you haven’t.
Hit reply if you’ve got an idea for a post.
And if you’ve ever said “circle back” unironically… we’ll forgive you. Eventually.
More soon,
Vicki
